Ingredients

Dough

  • 0.5 cup butter (cold, grated or diced)
  • 2.75 cups all-purpose unbleached white flour (or light whole wheat flour + 1 tbsp for high altitude)
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder (reduce to 2 ½ teaspoons for high altitude)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or use 1 ¾ teaspoons pumpkin pie spice and omit other spices)
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.666 cup pumpkin puree (use 100% pumpkin, not filling)
  • 0.333 cup maple syrup (plus 2 tablespoons)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon maple flavoring (optional)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream (plus 2 tablespoons for brushing)
  • 0.5 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter (browned)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 0.5 teaspoon maple extract (or vanilla)
  • 1-2 tablespoons heavy cream (or milk)

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Mix dry ingredients and cut in cold butter until crumbly.
  • Add pumpkin, maple syrup, vanilla, eggs, and cream; mix until just combined. Shape into rounds and cut into wedges.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden. Let cool slightly.
  • Prepare glaze by browning butter, then whisk in maple syrup, maple extract, and cream. Drizzle over cooled scones.

Notes

For a flakier texture, keep butter very cold and handle dough minimally.
