A nutritious and flavorful shepherd's pie featuring lean ground turkey and a protein-packed mashed potato topping, perfect for a comforting family dinner.

Ingredients

Meat

  • 1 lb ground turkey (93% lean, 7% fat)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 medium carrots, peeled and diced
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas or fresh green beans, chopped
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary, crushed
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • to taste Salt and black pepper
  • 2 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened Greek yogurt or low-fat cottage cheese
  • 1 scoop unflavored protein powder (whey or plant-based)
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup warm milk (dairy or plant-based)
  • 2 tbsp fresh chives or parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions 

  • Sauté diced onions, carrots, and celery in olive oil until softened (~6 min). Add garlic and cook 1 min.
  • Add ground turkey; cook until no longer pink (~8 min). Stir in tomato paste, herbs, spices, and broth; simmer 10 min. Mix in peas in last 3 min.
  • Boil potatoes until tender (~15-20 min). Drain, then mash with butter, warm milk, Greek yogurt, and protein powder. Season to taste.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread filling in a baking dish, top with mashed potatoes, and create textured ridges with a fork.
  • Bake for 25-30 min until bubbling and golden. Broil 2-3 min for crispiness. Cool 10 min, garnish, and serve.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a dash of Worcestershire sauce or hot sauce to the filling.
