  • 2 large apples (peeled and sliced)
  • 1/4 cup butter (for caramel and cake)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (for caramel)
  • 1/4 cup cream (for caramel)
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar (for caramel)
  • 1/2 cup browned butter (prepared separately)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 eggs eggs
  • 3/4 cup whole milk

Instructions 

  • Brown 1/2 cup butter in a saucepan over medium heat until foam turns brown, then cool slightly.
  • Prepare caramel: melt butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar; add apples and cream, simmer until soft. Pour into prepared pan.
  • Mix dry ingredients; in a mixer, beat sugar, browned butter, vanilla, then eggs. Alternate adding flour and milk, scraping sides.
  • Arrange apples over caramel in the pan, then pour batter on top. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 55-60 minutes.
