A moist and flavorful spice cake infused with apple sauce and topped with cream cheese frosting, perfect for fall gatherings.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened to room temperature)
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened apple sauce
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 lg eggs

Frosting

  • 2 tbsp butter (softened to room temperature)
  • 4 oz cream cheese (softened to room temperature)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tbsp half & half (or whole milk)

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a cake pan.
  • Mix dry ingredients in a bowl. In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy, then add eggs, apple sauce, buttermilk, and vanilla.
  • Gradually combine wet and dry ingredients. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  • Bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool.
  • Prepare frosting by beating cream cheese, butter, vanilla, cinnamon, and powdered sugar. Add half & half to reach desired consistency. Frost cooled cake.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature ingredients and do not overmix the batter.
